Description

Critical and historical analysis of of Honoré Beaugrand's 1877-1878 serialized novel, Jeanne la fileuse. Speculation on the author's political, social, and artistic motives for writing about nineteenth-century French Canadian emigration to New England, and the uniqueness of his liberal perspective at that time. Some thoughts on the novel's serialized publication in multiple newspapers, its soon-after publication as a single volume, and its twentieth-century re-publication in France and the United States. Differences among the published versions, varying intentions of the publishers, and consideration for each version's distinct audience.
