Article on the historical origins of the name of "Vermont" as it describes both the New England state and the mountain range of which it is a part. The relationship of some other geographic place names in this region to the explorers and founders of 17th century New France, as well as later historical figures. Cartographic, journalistic, and other evidence locating the 18th century birth of the term "Vermont" as a probable translation of its English predecessor, "Green Mountains."
